Exploring our nation's capital with 2 wonderful friends
After some crazy flight problems Abigail joined us and we started Friday off with 3!!! The best way to get around DC is the metro, but we needed to get close first, so we parked near a stop...nice parallel parking Lisa

Going down??
How confusing does that baby look...we finally figured it out, only took 3 master's prepared women.
On the metro
At this point we made our first trip of the day to the Native American History museum for lunch, we'll get back to this one later...but in the mean time check out that copper work
Lunch took longer than we expected so we had to hustle it to the walking tour and actually picked it up just a minute from the start.
First stop, the Washington Monument...that baby is tall. If you notice the brickwork changes about 1/3 of the way up... they had to stop for the war or money and when they got back around to finishing it the quarry was out of the same stone so they had to use a different one!
That is one TALL monument.

Then it was onward to the WWII memorial, I caught this little girl looking at the stars which represent all the soldiers who lost their lives, 1,000/star!...sort of poetic, don't you think.

A short walk later and we were at the Vietnam vets memorial. This has quite some history to it and we were lucky enough to hear some of that history from a vet himself. The design of the wall was chosen from a contest. The winner was an asian girl who had also used the design as a project for one of her school assignments, she got a B+ by the way. Since she was asian there was quite a controversy about using her design and her name wasn't even mentioned at the opening. The wall itself is reflective so you can see yourself in the names of the fallen. The names are arrainged in order of passing, with the first name starting to the left of the middle and the last name on the right side of the middle, this way the first and last person killed in war are next to each other on the wall coming full circle. The pictures don't really reflect the setting of the wall well but it seems to come out of a crack or cut in a hill, representing the impact on the country...there is tons more so read up!
Just a short walk and we were at the Lincoln Memorial...Lincoln is one big guy! The architecture in this place was just stunning.

and the view Lincoln has of the Washington Monument.
Me, Abigail, and Abe
Nice finger Miss Hoopes.
At this point Abigail realized she had left her credit card on the tray after lunch and we decided to hike it back and see if we could locate it...here are a few more shots of the museum

Where we ate lunch...YUMMY food that was seperated by location in the US, ie south, northwest, etc.
After a long day we scheduled to meet trey for some yummy dinner but had about an hour to blow first...wine sounds like a good idea.
A few more shots of our busy day

The nurses memorial from Vietnam
Three nurses at the memorial
After such a long day you might think we took it easy the next...well you'd be WRONG :)
We headed over to Mt. Vernon, George Washington's home.
George, Martha, and their grandchildren (oh, and Lisa)

Wait, wasn't there a sign that said don't pet the animals...I told her to do this and she did!!!!!

He is actually HERE and we happened to catch a nice ceremony honoring him that meant that they opened the gates, oh and Abigail got her name in the history books for helping ;)

The old family vault that Washington had moved...probably so it wouldn't collapse into the river
